What are the Martha's Cottage eligibility requirements?
  • Our services are designed for clients 60 or older.

  • Our services are provided at no cost.

  • Our housing locations are confidential to ensure residents’ safety.

  • Our housing is not emergency shelter; we are not equipped to house people in emergency situations.

  • An individual must be able to live independently to reside at one of our cottages.

  • Our cottages are not staffed.

  • We work with clients of any gender, but will not house different genders together in the same cottage.

  • We serve all Maine residents.

How are people referred to Martha's Cottage?

We accept referrals from a variety of sources, including social service providers, medical providers, faith communities, law enforcement, Maine Adult Protective Services, and family members. Individuals may self-refer.

Through our intake process, our staff review each individual’s situation and assess whether our program will meet his or her needs.

What services are provided to Martha's Cottage clients?

Our trained staff can provide the following services to our Martha’s Cottage clients: 

  • Case management

  • Safety planning

  • Financial planning assistance

  • Resource connection and referrals

  • Legal advocacy and referrals

  • Housing advocacy

I need to find shelter for a client right away. Is Martha's Cottage an option?

Our housing is not emergency shelter. We are not equipped to house people in emergency situations. If someone is in imminent danger, call 911.

  • For emergency shelter for someone fleeing abuse, you may call the Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence at 1-866-834-HELP (4357)

  • To find an emergency shelter nearest you, please visit the Maine State Housing Authority website here.

  • If an older adult is experiencing sexual assault, you may call the Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault at 1-800-871-7741.

  • If you are unsure whether you need to report a potential abuse case to Maine Adult Protective Services, you may call our A Helping Voice line, Monday- Friday, 9:00 AM- 5:00 PM at 805-5555 and someone will help you assess the risk. 

Where are your Cottages located?

Our Cottage locations are confidential to protect the safety and privacy of our residents. We have several locations and provide housing for clients from anywhere in Maine.
